Chinese New Year Celebration a Resounding Success

The Chinese New Year Celebrations at Livingston High School on Saturday, January 28, 2012 was a resounding success with a sold out evening performance. The Chinese Culture Day started with an exhibition of free cultural exhibits, martial arts, children’s games, adult riddles, senior fun activities, and Chinese Arts Workshops, and finished with a stunning evening show comprised of traditional dances, music , martial arts, and magic.

The event organizers Livingston Chinese Association (LCA), Livingston Huaxia Chinese School (LHXCS), Living Stone Christian Church (LSCC) and Livingston High School (LHS) welcomed VIP guest including Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, Mayor Stephen Santola, Deputy Mayor Rudy Fernandez, and Livingston Township Manager Michele Meade. The evening program started with a traditional Lion Dance performed by Wushu-Kungfu, and was followed by a group young dancers celebrating the holiday in the spirit and style of traditional Chinese festivals with a Dance called Family Joy. The Livingston Huaxia Chinese School performed a “Let’s Swing the Twin Oars” dance followed by a Classic Ballet by members of Yana Yu Dancing.

The Living Stone Christian Church Brother Quartet sang “New Hope” and “How Great thou Art” which was followed by a Tibetan dance, and the Livingston Chinese Association Modern Violin performance entitled “Thunderstorm” a combination of classic instruments and modern dance. The Livingston Huaxia Chinese School fused modern ballet with artistic aerobatics for a wonderful dance called “Concentric Circle” and “Tango on the Keyboard.” This was followed by Zheng Solo “Spring Debut on Snow Mountain performed by Margaret Mao. The Livingston Huaxia Chinese School and Senior Club preformed a spectacular “Dancing Fans” which proved that age does not matter as long as the heart is filled with joy.

Wushu-Kungfu wowed the audience with a masterful martial arts display and the Living Stone Christian Church Chorus sang “Angel Heart” and “Congratulations.” In “Broadway Girls” Yana Dancing combined Broadway jazz dance, modern dance and ballet into an energetic performance that highlighted American style and culture. While “Bamboo Rustling Like Raining” dance by Livingston Chinese Association members provided a melodious counterpoint of traditional dance. Invited performers Shusheng Wang sang “I Love Northern Snow” and “Dear Papa” in Italian, while the Northeastern Duet Actors Yufu Wang and Shuxia Guo performed “New Year Blessing.” The evening was rounded off with a display of juggling and magic by Grace Chang Team.
